Illuminated Stillness

Illuminated Stillness was my first solo exhibition, bringing together a collection of linocut prints and acrylic paintings inspired by the leadlight windows of my home and the changing patterns of light they cast across everyday objects.

I was initially drawn to the strong graphic lines of the windows, but soon became fascinated by the way light moved through the house, transforming ordinary scenes into something worth pausing to notice.

Many of the works focus on traditional still life subjects such as flowers, glass vases, bottles and books. As the exhibition developed, however, I found myself drawn to other moments unfolding around the windows: my daughter sitting in the window frame while the family gathered outside, or my dog curled up on a chair beneath the leadlight glass. These quiet observations became just as important as the still lifes themselves.

I love the simplicity and graphic quality of linocut, which allows me to emphasise shape, contrast and the play of light. In my paintings, I explore a softer approach, using texture and layered colour to capture reflections and the subtle effects of light passing through glass.

Making these works was a way of paying closer attention to my surroundings. They are records not of significant events, but of particular arrangements, encounters and fragments of home life that might otherwise pass unnoticed.

The exhibition comprised 30 original works, including limited-edition linocut prints, unique prints and acrylic paintings on timber panel. A selection of original paintings, framed prints and unframed editions from Illuminated Stillness is still available.
